The only possible concern with "economic zones" might be military-related.🤔Although China's planners certainly have thought of this already.🛡️At the current pace, Shenzhen's unprecedented achievements are definitely just a warm-up, though this also depends on future conditions🤔

Truth be told, the hypothesis that the U.S. can hold Hong Kong at ransom by the removal of most favoured nation or MFN status is just a hyperbole.
Based on the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. goods and services trade with Hong Kong totaled an estimated $66.9 billion in 2018. Exports were $50.1 billion; imports were $16.8 billion. The trade surplus on goods and services with Hong Kong of $33.4 billion was very much in U.S.’s favor.
On the other hand, Hong Kong total export of goods and services was $550 billion; while total imports was $589 billion, with negative trade balance of -$39 billion.
Hong Kong implements literally no effective applied tariff on imports and exports. Hence, the so-called Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status accorded by the U.S. to Hong Kong was never really a privilege per se.
Any attempt to remove and distort the MFN status by the imposition of tariffs would only hurt the U.S. importers and consumers. And if Hong Kong should reciprocate by applying tariffs on U.S. imports, it would equally disadvantage the U.S. exporters.

Shenzhen is a migrant city, open to outsiders from all walks of life in China. At least that was the idea and the reality in the early days. These days, exorbitant property prices have raised the barrier to entry for migrants from other parts of China. Only the children of commie ruling elites are raking it in as property speculators. Back in the day, people who came and settled in Shenzhen have an expression -- anyone who comes to Shenzhen is a Shenzhener. Locals welcomed outsiders who spoke no Cantonese. That openness could be destroyed if Beijing continues to insist that only Gaoduan people can come to the Greater Bay Area, while discriminating against Diduan people. There are high-end jobs for Gaoduan and low-end jobs for Diduan. If there are no Diduan migrants to do Diduan jobs in Shenzhen, labor cost will inevitably go up. In early 2018, Beijing demolished all the squatter slums of Diduan people in the imperial capital. That high-handedness of the imperial capital will be disastrous if applied to Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area.
