The world has become more insecure and a new arms race seems imminent. Disarmament treaties are lapsing and existing alliances crumbling. Will Germany be able to meet the challenges?

"We have systems in the German Armed Forces that are older than I am," says 45-year-old Peter Tauber (CDU), an undersecretary in the German Defense Ministry. At the same time, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has made it crystal clear: "We expect the Bundeswehr to invest more in defense.” What’s the current state of the Bundeswehr and how is it adapting to the new global challenges? What does NATO expect from Germany and how can the two sides reconcile their national and international strategies?

The USA accuses the Germans of recklessly jeopardizing the alliance’s future. At three successive summits since 2014, the German government promised to bring its defense spending closer into line with the two percent of gross domestic product laid down in the NATO Treaty, but it now expects it to be around 1.35 percent of GDP in 2019. "Germany's refusal to honor its pledge will have long-term consequences for NATO capabilities and solidarity,” warns Julianne Smith, a former security advisor to Obama's Vice President Joe Biden, adding that it wouldn’t be impossible for the US under Donald Trump to even leave NATO.” The filmmakers accompany NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force and observe German, Dutch and Norwegian troops on exercise in Poland. Nobody actually mentions Russia by name, but everyone here knows what they're training for. Russia has upgraded the defense capabilities of its Kaliningrad enclave with Iskander missiles that can be fitted with nuclear warheads. Yet just a few kilometers away, the German Army is training Lithuanian units on how to defend the Baltic state against an invasion from the East.

It’s okay if you go into debt buying guns and bombs, it’s an amazing infrastructure to have in your nation, the ability to build such intelligent capabilities aids the economy. In addition what is your debt collector gonna do if you say “no” & have a giant Air Force or navy. Why do you think the Us doesn’t care? We have the most to lose with the dollar being devalued and yet we see the silver lining of peace and know it’s about your infrastructure and ability to wage a successful war that makes you a nation of the future. After the Berlin wall coming down and the breakdown of the Soviet Union, during the negotiations with Gorbachev, the Russian was concerned about NATO expansion.  US Politician put this in the agreement and said this about NATO expansion....... "We will not expand 1 inch Eastward".....
Decades later, NATO membership has hugely increased and the new member Countries, which are literally on the Western borders of Russia, are Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary. You also have got Georgia and the Ukraine which are keen on, and on the way to, becoming full NATO members.

At 17:00 in the video, the German Brigadier General talks about money and the military, or the distinct lack of it, and he mentions Germany's commitment to the EU first....over NATO of course. This is why the Germans won't up their spending for NATO, it's about having this EU army.....I knew it!!😠😠

I spent 18 years in the U.S. Army, 1988-2006, and I’ve worked with many different soldiers from across the world. The German military is by far the best military I’ve ever worked with. I was highly impressed in everything within their ranks. It’s the only other military in the world that I wished I could have been a part of.

Seems like the scars of the world wars keep Germany from rearming. My option is that if Russia REALLY wanted to they would steam roll over Germany without U.S/U.K support. While times, tech, and tactics have improved Germany warlike people seem to be domesticated in retrospect to them being a feared people to fight through out the history of mankind. I can only hope that they never need to use there military.
