In 221 BC, the First Emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, conquered the Warring Kingdoms and united China.

He was a ruthless tyrant whose efficient government created growth and prosperity, with massive infrastructure projects, the most famous being the Great Wall of China.

In 1644, the Manchu, Qing Dynasty, conquered China and, over the next 267 years, made China into a great power.

The great Qing Emperor, Qianlong, a contemporary of George Washington, expanded China’s territory to 11 million square miles. China’s wealth grew to one-third of the world’s GDP.

Between 1840 and 1940, China suffered a Century of Humiliation, in which she was defeated and robbed of her wealth by foreign powers, the Europeans and the Japanese.

Chinese emperor who didn't want opium coming from England was a tyrant and English king was not tyrant who forced the Chinese to take opium as a payment for their goods. Hmm  very interesting

I would disagree with the commentary that  Chiang Kai Shek was a "capable and totally disciplined administrator". Chiang was a corrupt and a womanizer. He was channelling the U. S. aid at that time into his own pocket with the help of his wife and other sycophants. In fact Chiang had a hard time controlling his army as his soldiers were deserting him. To save his own skin and that of his cronies, he fled to Taiwan. He was no hero.

Very well produced and researched. I liked the way, you were able to explain through almost 50 years of history of detail of the rise of the CCP, Mao,  and the successors without missing  or over explaining the details.

Neutral narration is more profitable over time, You can never tell which way the wins will blow. Smart move

An excellent narration Mr Ali.. Like Emperor Shih Huang Ti who history says ruthlessly ruled a fractious people to establish a nation, Chairman Mao did the same. Today Chinese culture and time trusted practices flourish. My relatives are free to practice whatever religion they wish without hindrance as long as they stay clear of politics. To govern 1.4 billion it needs a strong hand more so when these 1.4 billion were poor and hungry then. 3 decades ago, I hear grouses about the lack of opportunities to uplift themselves. I as an outsider and only english literate read and hear of atrocities committed by corrupt officials against its people My visit 20 years ago and my family's 1st hand experience with officialdom changed my bias completely. Ordinary folks do have their rights and are their problems fairly addressed.  Today my relatives are generally happy with their lives and are proud of what China has become. My family and I are happy for them.

Be careful using words like "strange" and "crazed" to describe people like those involved in the Taiping and Boxer Rebellions.  It just makes them sound irrational and obscures the very real social, economic, and cultural reasons for their rebellions.

This is an excellently balanced narration on Mao. Yes, he was a tyrannical despot, but at the same time, the single-minded drive on industrial development provided the basis upon which Deng was able to modernise China's economy.

One fact that is often under appreciated is that during the First Opium War, the British military strength involved was only about 19 thousands or so, compared to more than 220 thousands on the Chinese side. Given the great disparity in strength, the British could have been easily overrun even with their more advanced and sophisticated weapons. Not only that, the British would have run into massive problems in their logistic supplies. As a matter of fact, all that the Chinese needed to do was to encircle them and cut off their food and water supply, and sooner or later the British would be in trouble. So how did the British manage to defeat China so easily? The reason was because the local Chinese helped them. The local Chinese were happy to provide the British with all the food supplies they needed because the British paid for them. The British also engaged the local Chinese to fight for them and the Chinese were happy to oblige as long as they were paid well. They looked at the war as one between the British and the government, which had nothing to do with them. This mentality of us the commoners versus them the government means that there was absolutely no sense of national identity and nationalism. The government of China today analysed their history and identified it as a major problem that they must fix. Hence, the strong emphasis on nationalism in China. The west looks at China's emphasis on nationalism and interprets it to mean that China is out to dominate the world. This is a big mistake as a result of ignorance of Chinese history. China's emphasis on nationalism is merely an attempt to correct what they see as a major defect in their nation's history.

1 thing that was incorrect was that emperor Qin didn’t build the Great Wall, he built a different wall in the central part of China. The Great Wall was built by the Ming dynasty

You know  why people hate Mao? because he destroyed privilege and promoted health and education for the underprivileged, which is against our established perception of order, and success.

Very fair story of China which also explains why China is today so angered by foreign forces trying anything possible to dismantle Chinese territorial integrity.
Mao had been too greedy at his old years while trying to keep power with his cultural revolution and basically ruined 30 years for China in term of economic development
