It was right after protesters stormed and ruined HK Legislative Council in July 2019. We accidentally came across a video of a British old man in the blue vest. This foreign face somehow aroused our curiosity because he was among the few foreigners who actually stood against protesters' violence in front of the camera, and he cried.

In our interview, he told us "before I came to China, I had read a lot of Western News and had a very negative image of China. And then I realized it's just totally biased."

If he did not come to China, he probably would never have the opportunity to know the truth about China. Therefore, he wants to speak out the truth and advises young people who have a twisted, distorted image of China, but have never been to China or don't have any mainland Chinese friends, "Go to China! Look and observe by yourself."

2019年7月1日，在部分示威者衝擊、破壞香港立法會大樓不久之後，我們看到了一位穿藍色背心的外國老人，無畏無懼地站在鏡頭前，對這些示威者的暴力行為感到憤怒，並反對和抗議這些暴力行為。他含著淚水，痛心說道「昨晚我看到這些，我哭了，我人生中有一半的時間都在香港，我愛香港，我愛中國」。

隨後，我們聯繫到了他，並有幸邀請他來我們節目「Be My Guest」作客。他是一個和藹可親的英國爺爺，也是位真空技術專家。在採訪中，他告訴我們「來中國前，我對中國的認識都是來自於西方媒體，那時候我印象裡的中國非常差。直到1981年，我來到了中國，幾乎去過了中國的每個地方，我感到非常震驚，這根本不是他們所描繪的中國。」

他慶幸自己能親身來到中國，不然，他可能永遠無法知道，原來中國是如此美好，充滿希望。「我就是這麼過來的，所以我不想留有遺憾，我選擇站出來說出真相。雖然，我不知道有多少人能聽到。」

而對於那些恐懼中國、扭曲中國，又或道聽塗說，卻從未去過中國，又或只是跟過旅遊團來到內地，卻沒任何中國朋友的人，特別是香港的年輕人，這位英國爺爺語重心長地建議他們 「請自己去中國看看，親身體驗，親身感受。」

I was born in the 60s, and, like most people my generation, educated under the British Colonial system. Therefore, as such, I had always admired anything Western, and hated anything n everything Chinese. I had lived and studied in Paris for 3 years, emigrated to Canada n lived there for a few years and worked in Beijing for four years until the June 4 Incident, so I know what countries abroad and in China are like. In those days, I never identified with being Chinese at all, but everything changed when i saw what happened during Occupy Central. Like Peter, I was confused for a while, so I started to dig deeper into everything related to China. Gradually as I learnt more n more about China, I came to the realisation that I was totally mistaken! What happened to Hongkong since last June and more recently, how China and the Western countries handled the pandemic completely converted me into a firm Chinese worshipper! I take great pride in being Chinese! I'm also heartbroken for Hong Kong! Peter, thanks for your love for HongKong and China, and for pouring out your heart to the world!

I am at the same age group like him, may be a bit older. I have travelled to China countless time after I retired nearly 11 years ago. Having a Science and Engineering training, I mostly concluded that the physic al truth and result is important in life. That is how I view China, I don't care much about Communism or capitalism system (they came with different favourites and colours anyway) , But I do care about the result, a result statically told me that they had provided and helped most of the 1.4 billion people with a good and secure life. And they had achieved in such a short life time. It truly opened my eye and told myself... " I considered the Chinese government had done a tremendous job and it was a successful experimental system. Dose it have room to improve, like the human rights issues etc. certainly ( also depends how we defines it ) , So please bring down the rhetoric, learn a bit more, let the Chinese people to decide their future.

I am very impressed by such a good man who can honestly tell the truth. Eventhough he is an British, he reviews the UK gov't didn't bring democracy while HK was still under it's colony. Bravely attitudes criticize dark force rioters only leading destruction instread of democracy to the people in HK. can't be appreciated enough for him to speak out. touched my heart, tears in my eyes, not because of how he backs up China, but when he said how people would regret post retirement if they didn't do something to change the society. i can clearly see how myself and my children look down on me in 40, 50 years time if I didn't do anything today.

I spent 20 years of my working career working in 26 countries, then when I gave up the work and I spent the next three years traveling around China, I managed to spend my time between about 40 cities... China is nothing like the negative and Agenda ridden rubbish that pours out of the news from Australia, America and the UK... and now America is drumming up hatred Internationally, regards to CovID 19, when this was initially developed in the USA then moved by Dr Fauci to the Wuhan Laboratory to continue the Crimeric Research work on this Virus (which was then banned in the USA) Fauci paid the Lab 3.7 million USD of Tax payers money for the work... All is checkable and provable... but the media have a "Paid for" Agenda to throw hatred at China.

This is great that westerners come out to speak about their experience. I have been thinking how to share this more broadly to the western viewers. The I realized it is impossible.
The internet make it possible that this is available for others that don't hold the same view. The only problem is the internet also make it impossible for those who don't hold the same view to see this interview. Now the internet is littered with so many echo chambers (based on facts or otherwise) about everything and anything, including China. So the people who viewed and liked this interview are usually the ones that already agreed. It seems East and the West would be in this perpetual conflicts, amplified 1000 times by the internet.
