Historically China s been the ultimate melting pot.  Think of Roman Empire that somehow kept going...

Typical US view of China infiltrated by Western symbolism.  Just because u learnt some Chinese does not make u any more legitimate.

Why care about China so much..?? You guys wanna sell them some warez? Opium-2 ?  Leave China alone.. USA has a gazillion dollar debt which she has no intention of paying off.. or the highest incarceration rate in the world. Perhaps Mr Osnos should do a series on all that in the world's most powerful country.

Very nice video! I'd heard of a new generation of patriotic Chinese entering politics, but Osnos presents an even more complex picture. It sounds like China is dealing with the multi-culturalism that Western countries have dealt with over the past century or so.

Great piece.  I will buy Mr. Osnos book.  His sympathetic, nonaligned style reminds me of Studs Terkel.

Here's what happened 7 years after this video:

* China deployed Beidou satellite network, a replacement of GPS.
* China built 10000 km high speed rail and 300km/h-500km/h bullet trains.
* A Chinese company Dji  dominates the world drone market.
* Another Chinese company Huawei, its cellphones, laptops, tablets and routers is dominating the world consumer electronics market. currently the U.S is banning Huawei.
* China built 2 aircraft carriers and launched 180 new navy ships.
* China designed 2 types of indigenous stealth fighter jets.  2 types of attack helicopters and 3 new types of destroyers.
* China built the world fastest super computer and have kept record since.
* China invented the world first quantum encryption machine and deployed it on satellites.
* China made the world's most powerful super laser that can create matter out of thin air by splitting the air.
* China built bunch of fake islands in the middle of the ocean. (LOL)
* China has applied the most patents in the world.
* China quadrupled the publication of scientific research papers, now ranked world no.2. China was not on the list when this video was made.
* China put 2 space stations in the orbit and sent bunch of Taikonauts (meaning Chinese astronaut) there.

Man that's a lot of things done in just 7 years. Here in Canada my city can't even get a hole filled in 2 years.
