How is China's economy doing? Let's look at the latest data. In July, China's inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index or CPI, rose by one percent year on year. Rising CPI traditionally suggests worsening inflation. Meanwhile, on the trade side, export growth slowed in July to a 19.3-percent growth rate, which is attributed to the Delta-led resurgence of COVID-19 cases worldwide. So what's the outlook on the Chinese economy for the rest of 2021? Tian Wei asked Michael Pettis, a well-respected American economist, at his hutong office in the heart of Beijing.

Dear Tian Wei, The dual circulation strategy is a game changer. As rural China continues to develop and grow plus the urbanisation also continuing, growth is going to happen at a good pace for a long time. Don't worry

Looking at the rural progress of China, I believe this is the greatest achievement of all the developments undertaken by China. In most developing economies, the rural areas do not progress fast enough because of poor logistics connectivity thus affecting their produce delivery at the city and it looks like China has been able to overcome this connectivity. It is common that rural folks often suffer when their produces are unable to reach the market in time. It is certainly a win-win scenario between the workers in the city and the farmers from the rural area.

China is focusing on its domestic demand to spur Growth. Export growth will be easing down in the coming months. China still the only nation that achieved high growth compared to any nation. Even its FDI recorded double digit growth.

How could we possibly just focus on the investment part without heeding the political issues faced today. Absolute nonsense!

Next year, the countries that have fully vaccinated themselves will be able to have a good economic development. However, countries that are not vaccinated will have major problems. Companies that dependent on only one supply chain, factory, transport hub will have a big problems when outbreaks trigger a lockdown. To reduce the risk companies have increase their storage and diversities the supply chain.

I hope you are right about the positives outcome of Biden infrastructure turns out successful. But judging from past track records corrupt politicians will make the Rich Richer and with US typical snail speed the projects will get delayed rising cost. I hope I am wrong.

I have read a book by Mr. Pettis from 10 years ago. It seems his view on the prospect of Chinese economy has evolved quite a bit

It may not be a matter of equality; it may be that the private educational companies are often fraudulent and ineffective, and the whole idea does not lead to better human development in China. The preference of the parents may not be best for the children--China has a strong and effective government.
