Southeast Asia (ASEAN) is considered a key region geopolitically for both China & the US. In this video, we answer the following: 1) Why is Southeast Asia a key region geopolitically for both China & the US? 2) Will ASEAN Choose China over the US? 3) Are ASEAN countries forced to choose between the US and China? 4) Could this rivalry escalate to a kind of cold war along the lines we saw between the US & USSR? One thing is sure: ASEAN underestimates itself and its power to the extent to which it can be a decisive & balancing power in the geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific region. US will never be able to break Myanmar from ASEAN. Every ASEAN country knows that going alone, the individual country will not survive. ASEAN and China are working out some rules regarding the South China Sea and collaborate economically in the overlapping waters. 71 mijmijrm mijmijrm 4 days ago (edited) China isn't interested in political control and domination. China is all about what China is good at: infrastructure, business and trade. The USA is all about being in political control .. "converting" nations into pseudo-democracies = US puppet states. Even if it means subversion, fake protests and terrorism. The USA makes it very difficult to avoid submitting to USA interference. 45 Jason Warsong Jason Warsong 4 days ago (edited) You should do a segment on the Deputy of Secretary Sherman's visit to China: She came in with arrogance and tried to lecture China about the rules of law, but instead, she was scolded for two days and given the conditions not to cross the red lines. This was probably the most humiliating meeting by an American diplomat in history. 41 sfukuda512 sfukuda512 4 days ago ASEAN could be the next EU, preferably without the authoritarian superstructure. They need to maintain solidarity. Unfortunately, the US, in the form of NED and USAID is doing its best to do the simple divide-and-conquer. At some point, ASEAN needs to think about its own security and defense structure. Historically, that has not meant looking to rival China or the US. They really do not want Japan to re-militarize. 43 Wumao50cent Troll Wumao50cent Troll 4 days ago Lol early today😊 ASEAN is a forever neighbour of China and inspite of all the problems they may have with it I am sure they will be very careful in being pro US. Regardless as China becomes richer so is the neighborhood unlike the US where it's neighbourhood is becoming poorer and while China does not interfere in the internal affairs of it's neighbours the US is involved with regime changes in it's backyard. Considering all this in the long run ASEAN might become closer to China once their bilateral/territorial issues are settled. 58 Nameless Warrior Nameless Warrior 4 days ago Smaller and developing asian nations will never get a fair go if they decide to join the US! Then again no matter how strong or developed you are. You will never get a fair go or treated equally if you decide to join the US! You will only forever be good enough to be a lackey of the US and must do as you're told with very little benefits for your obedience but guaranteed enemies galore! 30 Watshiisie Nyuthe Watshiisie Nyuthe 4 days ago ASEAN n China is the number one trading partners in the world, I hope Asean will not lean towards US since every countries of Asean need development, US is just using Asean for military reasons. Developing infrastructure is the dire need for Asean countries. 209 Johnny Lim Johnny Lim 4 days ago ASEAN will not fall for the American trap. No country in their right mind will want US bases in their country. What we want is economics stability and which ever country that can give us that will be our friend. Luckily Australia was not accepted into Asean or there will be chaos today. 69 Pahat pahat Pahat pahat 4 days ago The nearness of China to ASEAN has developed their regional trade enormously hence, unless US can match the trading figures between ASEAN and China, there is no reason for ASEAN to upset the current trade arrangements among and between them. One interesting indicator is the Myanmar Port of Daiwei which was developed under ADB under the Mekong Sub-regional Commission where China was not invited because she was not a member of the Mekong Commission. And what happen to this port? Vietnam and Japan got involved together with India with mega-plan to build a rail-road highway across Thailand and Cambodia to Vietnam. It simply could not take off, because in spite the big talk of India and Japan, there isn't enough volume to justify its completion. Though China could have helped since Daiwei is just some 200 plus km from Bangkok and all China can do is to help to rail-link it so that she can also export to the African Ports. Even Japan combining with India could not deliver! Anyway, China is the leading trading partner with ALL ASEAN members. You were right to point out that the demonstrations in Thailand has got something to do with the West trying to upset the growing relationship between them! 58 Steven Cher Steven Cher 4 days ago ASEAN countries are not stupid to give up or allow any foreign powers to destabilize the collective growth led by China. China=growth and development, assuring each country progress. USA=Situation in Iraq, Libya, Syria, Venezuela, lran, Myanmar, Ethiopia ......the list goes on. 23 J 2B J 2B 4 days ago (edited) If any ASEAN country is foolish enough to join the USA will find that the only investment coming from the USA/NATO will be military hardware and base's. No jobs or infrastructure development will come from USA. 65 Frank Yapp Frank Yapp 4 days ago The rise of Asia in particular China is unstoppable despite a very strong challenge from the US. ASEAN and China are glue together in term of trade enjoying a win/win scenario right now. I hope the US would work and cooperate with China and ASEAN to ensure peace and prosperity , The US should welcome China rise and not treat China as a political and economic rival . Why wanna create a lose/lose situation ,why not a win/win situation ? 18 christopher bong christopher bong 3 days ago The US will promised ASEAN the moon for their alliance. The Americans will just discard you like a used condom when you are no longer needed. Just ask the Kurds, the students/rioters in Hong Kong. ASEAN leaders better be smart and not be lull by the US sweet talks, after all the US is going downhill. 15 will engel will engel 4 days ago Singapore PM Lee HL once said, "The Brits were here. They left. Someday, the US too." US lost the standoff with its 2 aircraft carrier battle groups against the PLA in 2016. that's not lost on ASEAN countries. Viet-Nam depends on which faction is in power and the Philippines depends on who wins the election next year. 13 Tammy Lei Nyo Tammy Lei Nyo 4 days ago The U.S. not long ago, they were trying selling military goods, patrol boats and submarine to Philippine and Vietnam, why on earth would you buy expensive military equipment while their country need more marketing and developed, you work with China is a all win solutions. 87 ABELARDO ASISTIDO ABELARDO ASISTIDO 3 days ago Geographically, the US has no reason to pass the Asian seas. It can only stay on its seas. I also hope that the South American countries must unite and develop a strong bond to neutralize American interference thru the support of CIA backed terrorists that actually working for the benefits of transcorporations operating in the South American countries. 3 Yen Fei Ho Yen Fei Ho 4 days ago The Philippines was part of the USA before the second world war. When Japan attacked the US at Pearl Harbour and invaded the Philippines, the US then, didn't defend what was then their own people. Why should people believe that now when it is an independent country that the US can ever be trusted to defend them. The US has always been a selfish country that only looks after their own 1% elite. Now that Asia is growing and developing they do not need "USA's help" 37 Annie Tan Annie Tan 4 days ago If Thailand constructs a canal at the isthmus of Kra, that will be an alternative route to the Straits of Malacca. 20 leonard chen leonard chen 3 days ago In the long term, ASEAN will have close contact with China, because there has been continuous Chinese migration into the ASEAN countries for over 500 years since the Ming dynasty, since the time of Zhengho voyages around 1442. Chinese culture are now deeply rooted in ASEAN with intermarriages among the locals and Chinese over the years, and there are Chinese loan words and expressions scattered in all the languages of ASEAN. Only the last hundred years of colonialism have opened the rift between
