I had started to read "Confessions" and I admit, was stumbling through it. I came to YouTube today, a Sunday, and saw this video. As I watched this. it then came to me that I needed to see this, to understand exactly St. Augustine's history and story and now I feel I can understand his works. I am humbled at how much I thought I knew, and how much I need to learn. Praised be to God! 47 Louis Accardi Louis Accardi 1 year ago (edited) As a young convert to Christ at 17 I began to read the Confessions of St Augustine and down through the years I would return to it now and then. My older brother Jack was riding down the street one day and passed a public library and turned his car around and went into that library as though something was directing him. He went down a few stacks of books and turned around and reached up his hand not knowing what he was pulling out of the shelf. It was the Confessions of St. Augustine. He read it and God granted him the gift of compunction and contrition. He committed his life afresh to the Church and the Faith he abandoned as a youngster. Both of us were impacted by the life of St. Augustine. I am now 70 years old and have been brought back to this great text. This video caused me to look for the Confessions in my library in my home. The Confessions I possess was an old translation that I loved much better than some of the watered down versions, which I have and have read but did not feel that they contained the beauty of this older version, which I have kept for many years. It was the translation by Pusey and the Reverend Fulton Sheen. The Confessions read like Scripture and some of it is an intertwining of it. Thank you so much for this video especially for including the part about the death of Monica. I was deeply moved by this video presentation. 9 Kevin Hughes Kevin Hughes 4 years ago this documentary was pretty good. Augustine is one of my favorite church fathers. Nevertheless there were a few problems with it, namely that it did not accurately represent his theology nor his conversion. This video implies that Augustine was like a person in an American church today, praying a prayer and signing a card, then entering heaven by his works. This isn't what Augustine himself thought though. He didn't say, "then I surrendered myself to Christ." Augustine said that he "did not want or need to read any farther" after reading from Romans 13, "for in that moment the light of faith flooded into my soul and dispelled all the darkness of sin and doubt." Augustine did not believe that his own shallow and fickle working and willing had saved him. He believed with the Apostle Paul in Romans 9:16 that ""It is not the one who wills nor the one who runs, but God who shows mercy." And his life is one of the great examples of said truth. 35 Doug Moore Doug Moore 2 years ago I first read the city of god when a young catholic with little knowledge of faith. If the history of the church and saints are treated and presented like this, many will have a deeper appreciation of the Catholic Faith.
