Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced the official launch of the BeiDou-3 global navigation satellite system. The final satellite was put into orbit last month, with the following testing successful. The Chinese system has joined in GPS, Glonassa and Galileo in providing services worldwide. What functions will BeiDou have – both in and outside China? How will it aid China's space program? And, with U.S. talk of a new space race, how can China promote space cooperation rather than conflict?
