China has ordered the U.S. to close its consulate in Chengdu, in response to the U.S.' directive for China to shut down its consulate in Houston within 72 hours on Tuesday. The latest consulate spat has sent the China-U.S. relations to spiral downward. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday what he calls "America's blind engagement policy with China" has failed. I have to respectfully disagree with Professor Sachs on his optimism to wait until the November election. Keep in mind, Joe Biden was the Vice President in 2011 (or 2012) when US foreign policy made the "pivot to Asia" by one example sending a 1/3 of its Naval Fleet to Asian waters and executing military drills to antagonize China and the DPRK. The US has been exacerbating tension by patrolling the South China Sea.

It's safe to assume these anti-China policies are going to be continued despite which Administration wins in November.
