Fun fact: Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 has a very special meaning to Lang Lang, he is inspired to play piano after seeing Tom and Jerry episode The Cat Concerto

Horowitz: but the arrangement is supposed to be impossible.
Lang Lang: not impossible, necessary.

This is Lang Lang showing off. That’s the point of the Horowitz arrangement, it’s really to let a true virtuoso have a skill ceiling on a piece that’s absurd for anyone normal.

If you dilettantes and snobs had more than an eye drop's worth of musical knowledge, you would realize that Liszt likely performed this piece differently every time. That's the nature of a rhapsody... we're not talking about a Bach partita or a Beethoven sonata. It's meant to be fun, flashy and even frivolous. Some of you need to relax and smile :)

This is not Liszt's version, but Horowitz's one.

I think this is great!
It seems like he loves his interpretation, makes me love it just as much.
Who cares if you don't think it's the best interpretation, Lang Lang owned this piece. It is his because of his interpretation. When you started to stigmatize the interpretation, it strips the music of it's magic. Let's celebrate his achievement, not stigmatize ! respectfully.

It's perfect. If I could ever play it, that's exactly how I would play it. It's full of energy and craziness. Playing a piece like this so freely shows another level of mastery that I have never seen before

If Liszt would been on crystal meth it would sound like this. Not for everybody and definitely not for the ones that hoped to hear the original score, but my god what a great performer this guy is!
The original is one of the most difficult (popular) pieces to play. He plays it as it’s too easy.
Again, not for everybody, I love the original but this guy is a real boss.

Horowitz arrangement is extremely difficult to play. Lang Lang interpretation on this piece was brilliant, and technically he is absolutely top level.

Because Langlang is so much more mechanically skilled, he could play it in a way where some other pianists might think of but can't get to because of skill limitations. He's a freaking beast!

Ok, not what a regular pianist thinks about this piece. But i think Liszt would be proud. A real virtuous. Funny and majestic!

For those of you asking about dissimilarities, this is not the original Liszt version but the Liszt-Horowitz version. It makes the easy parts harder and the hardest part easier.

I agree with you completely. I honestly don't care what Lang Lang does but how he plays. This is still my favorite interpretation of HR2, just so much energy.

Lang Lang has "something original" in his playing! He is 1 of the "twin princes of piano" of China, the other being Yundi Li ! China is so lucky to have them both at the same time! Cheer, Lang Lang!

So classical music is supposed to only have one single interpretation, and be a stoic, emotionless piece of art work?

this is totaly deformed version of Lang Lang.
When you will hear the HR2 played by Hamelin, you will almoust not recognize this played by Lang Lang
This one is for my taste the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su2lLZRMQ9w (especial from 9.19 min).
Nobody plays this part as Hamelin does.
Lang Lang has surely very good technik, but his interpretation is like a clounery.
I do not like this.

The version of the ending he is playing is the easiest professional version for the song, try listening to Horowitz or Yundi Li, the ending is MUCH harder than the version he is playing. The guy was talking total shit, that version wasn't arranged by Horowitz, and Horowitz didn't make the song impossible, he made the easier parts harder and the ending, which is the hardest part of the piece, easier.
