In this video, I present the reasons why talking about absolute poverty is not applicable in China's case. Most of the poor in China are better described as relatively poor. This difference can be easily quantified by looking at life prospects for an 18-year old undergraduate city dweller in Dongguan: saving potential of up to USD$4,000 a year.

If more Westerners had taken the time to read Xi Jinping's 'The Governance of China', both volumes, they might start to understand what 'socialism with Chinese characteristics' is all about. As a Norwegian I know from old that social justice and some degree of equality make a much more harmonious and safe society. When everyone has enough to get by, everyone benefits, it is a win-win situation, something the Chinese government also seems to fully appreciate, but Westerners and especially US Americans don't understand. So, I look forward to the day Europeans start to embrace the Chinese model. Not necessarily copy it, but see the strong points.

I’m from a small village in China, people in my village earn less money or don’t have a job at all but they have land to grow grains like wheat, corn, peanut and vegetables and also they have chicken in the yard. They have houses to live in though it’s not the best but it gets all the essentials like tap water, solar heater and gas stove. Homeless r very rare to see in China.

Dude, that is the difference between being a socialist govt. with capitalism or popularly known as, Socialism with Chinese characters. Compare that with America’s pure democracy and capitalism, America disparity between the have and have-not is ridiculously wide and uneven. Everyone knows in America, the govt allowed the super-rich to be more super-rich like Jeff Bezo and same time allowed the super-poor people like those homeless in LA, SF or Seattle to continue. Whereas, in China, the govt may allow having super-rich people but they do not allow the poor to be super-poor ie. poor until they do not have shelter, suffering famine or be naked. The Socialist govt. will step in with policies like price-controlled of essential food items, basic health care and compulsory education system for the young.
Not in the case in America, the only politician that advocates such socialist policies is Bernie Sander. Whereas, Trump is definitely not the type, he is more for the super-rich class and love to discard the poor to shit-holes. 😅

Western media said Chinese are poor. So be it.
Since we are so poor. We have to work harder and produce more. We continue to encourage our kids to study science, math, engineer, medical.
We.welcome IT nerds and science people.
The US kids can enjoy more, play, parties, drugs, drink, sport, etc. We are not jealous. We have to work harder. Hopefully in 2030 we are not so poor anymore.
By the way. I like your youtube channel and opinion. Good stuff.

The right comparison would be to compare against a country's past as opposed to other countries. What's important is whether the country is progressing or regressing. How many families below poverty line in 1990, 2000, 2010 and now ? I believe the fact is, China's level of social development has improved tremendously over this three decades, whereas the data on US shows a deteriorating trend, hence the increasing social problems there.

The meaning of "poor people" is different between China and Westen. In China, poor people is only means less of cash, but they can still live well without cash.

Wow, most accurate interpretations of poor in China vs poor in Western countries. I live in NY, my coworker always complains he is being poor but making $100k a year . His income has like 25% of withholding taxes(may get some back when filing tax return the beginning of next year, but it reduces monthly income received. He pays rent for about $ 1600/ month. Car payments of $550/month+gas$160/month+car insurance $120/month and tolls. When he spends his hard earned money, there is 8.75% of sales tax. Then cable and internet, gas and electricity. Grocery shopping (food), clothing and hobbies(drinking), socializing, eating out, gadgets (phones, tv, games and computers, iPad....). He definitely has a luxury life, but at the end, no savings.

I like that Chairman Xi spends his precious time every year visiting the poorest areas of China, conducting research and sitting together face-to-face with the poorest residents. It can be said that no other leader in the world has been as enthusiastic about solving poverty as he is. Fortunately, China has such a wise leader.

The figure of 600 million quoted by Premier Li Keqiang was actually a rough estimate based on China's official data on distribution of per capita DISPOSABLE income, categorized from low to high into five quintiles. Such statistics are generally inferred from sampling households across the country and surveying their annual total disposable income, and then ranking them into 5 quintiles each containing 20% of households (from lowest to highest income). We then divide the total disposable income of in each quintile by the corresponding total number of persons (note: PERSONS, NOT the number of HOUSEHOLDS - China currently has about 3 persons per household on average), arriving at the per capita data. Hence, by 600 million we really mean the roughly 200 million households whose average disposable income PER CAPITA per month is less than 1000, which means the figure includes incomeless child, students and elders living in such households. For example, in a family of four with a couple + an elder + a child in elementary school, where both parents work and the incomeless elder help looking after the child, if the monthly income of the couple is less than 4000 yuan, the "per capita" of this household is less than 1,000. I'm sure it's still common to find such households in fourth- and fifth-tier cities, towns and villages, though we can hardly say that they are "poor" in the traditional sense of the word; chances are their standard of living is better than many of the so-called "middle class" folks in the West.

I suppose there are 2 ways to look at poverty, from wherever you may be - in absolute terms and in relative terms.
When people live in absolute poverty, they have very little to no assets in reality and typically rely on handouts to survive or they live a ' hand to mouth' existence. These are people who live very precariously ..... and may sometimes have to go without food because they don't have money to buy food nor have land to grow them. They literally have nothing or may live in an area where crop cultivation is next to impossible due to geographical terrain or climate or poor soil or poor skills at farming etc. China used to have a lot of such people living in such places. However, since opening up, China has prospered as a nation, yet, prosperity is not uniformly distributed and so the PRC government got the prosperous coastal provinces to adopt and help another poorer province to prosperity. Such policy has generally been quite successful and today. we can see that the many provinces of China have many very well developed towns and cities with modern amenities. However, there are still some people left living in absolute poverty in some isolated rural areas. The PRC government's policy was to assign CPC cadres to these isolated areas to study the specific issues affecting the economic development of the areas under their charge and then to recommend policy actions to the county and provincial governments. In many areas, these cadres helped the people by identifying correctly the economic viability of the areas under their control and carry out economic activities, such as setting up and cultivating orchards and then using their connections to help market their products. In this respect, modern technology in the form of eCommerce has helped in procurement and marketing enabling poor rural villages to market their products long distance. In the past, markets for rural produce were small and limited. Today, that market has grown to 1.4 billion people ..... at least In so doing, these direct intervention policies of the PRC governments, from the national to the provincial to the county levels, have been very successful in alleviating absolute poverty nationally. In areas which have been identified as unsuitable and or dangerous for any kind of economic activities, the provincial and national governments have tended to re-settle the affected populace in new villages and towns with modern amenities where they are able to seek jobs in factories or engage in other productive economic activities including going back to farming. In re-settling these affected populace, the respective governments tended to hugely subsidize the cost of resettlement including of new houses with amenities and access roads ...... thus ensuring that the affected people had a share in national prosperity too.
So, in that respect, we can see and say that China had lifted many millions of people out of absolute poverty and sharing in the country's new found prosperity although there are still some who are still to be brought out of abject poverty. China is still in the process of ensuring that these last few millions will also be brought out of absolute poverty, and given time, should be able to achieve their goal.
However, once their goal of reaching " zero" absolute poverty is achieved, that does not mean that poverty in China had been eliminated. There's always some one who is relatively poorer compared to some Chinese millionaires. Even between millionaires, there are some millionaires who are relatively poorer compared to others. A person with 2 million RMB is his bank account is relatively poorer than another with 200 million RMB. The difference in these examples involving millionaires is that they do not have to worry about immediate survival issues compared to the poorer working class people or poor farmers making 20,000 RMB a year because of their 'poorer' background. The example only serves to highlight the concept of relatively poverty. This concept of relative poverty will apply to any society in any country in the world.

See the CV handling, China government saves every single people's life disregard they are rich and poor. Same, if there are very poor people found below the poor line, government will help this people to secure their minimum life expenses. Particularly it affect the merit assessment of the local government officials. That is China communist system..

The poor in the west, as you refer to in this video, the homeless, I believe the majority of them are just lazy. There's a video somewhere in YouTube that shows, you'll be surprised here, they love their carefree lifestyle, drinking, doing drugs, etc and don't give a damn.

I just subscribed. Many homeless people in the U.S. tell me they don't go public "shelters" because in many shelters there are constant violence, physical attacks, rapes, diseases, and many other problems. They don't feel safe in these public shelters and prefer the streets.

Perhaps many farmers have only 1000 income a month, but they grow a lot of food, do not worry about eating, and they eat their own food, not into the income. If it were included (technically it should be), the income would be much higher

As HEAVEN SYU222 said,
"Li Keqiang: 600 M Chinese monthly salary is under 1000 RMB.
I think this 600 M includes about 500M of children, students, elderly.
There are around 900M work force in CHINA. ”
When I was in college for four years, I had about 1,000-2000RMB subsidized by the
government every year, in addition to part-time income of about 600RMB per month; However, due to government subsidies, my annual rent for accommodation is only 1200RMB (don’t consider water , Electricity costs), only about 15-20RMB (20x300=6000RMB) per day for dining in the school’s cafeteria. When I was studying for a master's degree for three years, I had 600RMB provided by the government every month, and part-time work had a monthly income of more than 1,000RMB. The accommodation rent and daily food and beverage expenses were similar to those before.
The above does not include scholarships.
Perhaps, when I was in college, I was also one of the poor people with a monthly income of 1,000 RMB from 600 million.

As much as I don’t support handout i think the only saving grace of the US would be universal basic income. Look up andrew yang.
Completely agree with your analysis. A janitor in china might have more money in the bank account than an admin office worker in us.

The so called poor Chinese mostly farmers own their homes outright. They have the land to grow anything they want. If they are below the poverty line, they are subsidized by the government. Some people go to cities and work there to save money for their future. Some of them set up their own businesses. All I am saying is that they all have different opportunities to choose.
