I think it's laughable that some people question the legitimacy of Lang Lang's interpretation just because he doesn't follow the score.

Let's establish a few things first:

1) You can't question a stylistic interpretation. This man is an internationally recognized pianist. The fact you think your interpretation of following the score exactly is just representative of how he's at a higher level of skill. Nobody who understands the piano scene would ever question this further. There's no doubt he could play the score to the exact note and tempo better than anyone in this comment section. He CHOSE not to play the score because any other recognized virtuoso could do that easily. Pianists like Lisitsa or even virtuosic violinists like Perlman never play the score exactly because you could master that easily. I'm not a huge fan of the whole pathos/ values thing in music but there's definitely emotion and uniqueness- it is literally an art form. If every master pianist played the score exactly there would be nothing to differintiate them with others.

2) There's no such thing as objective "perfection" in music. It all comes down to the quality of the sound. To a degree, you could argue that Chopin's original score sounds better, but I could argue the exact opposite, and neither of us would be right. What you CAN'T argue, however, is that one form is better than the other just because it follows the score. Everything is subjective on the piano. Lang Lang played what he thought sounded the best, and that reflects in his piece.

3) Most of these comments hating on his style are people who think they're entitled to be in his position. FACE IT. You think you're better than him because you play the score. The reason you felt the need to hate on him is because you either:

a) Think you sound better

or

b) Are green with envy because you play the score and he doesn't

Some of these people are adults and still so immature. I guarantee you that if you go to any music school, tell a student to play this score and record it, and compared it to your favorite musician playing the EXACT score, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. That's because literally anyone with enough skill CAN DO IT. Piano is an art form, not a vehicle for you to thrust your superiority complex into people more intelligent and who've put in more work than you. Ultimately, in the back of your head you're just an entitled brat who thinks that Lang Lang doesn't DESERVE this spot. And you're right, he doesn't DESERVE where he's at, he EARNED where he's at. At the end of the day, that needs support, not criticism, because it's a combination of his talent and practice. You might not "agree" with him but you HAVE to respect this man.

Finally, about the facial expressions. They're FUCKING HILARIOUS but pretty expressive too. Issa pretty gucci meme- and we'll leave it at that >:)

Lang lang gets more colors from a piano than any artist I've ever heard. I was present at a master class he did. When he reached over the student seated at piano and he  played example of what he was trying to get the student to do....you would have thought someone SWITCHED the instrument. I wouldn't have believed it was the same piano the student played if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes!

Strings arrogant and envyfull, chatting and like they don't care. Shame on them.  Genious performance here on the extraordinary way! Not one boring second for the audience. The good way!

I really love his style, I will love him no matter he is a Asian or white or black, it is so funny, and makes me laughs a lot, he can bring people happiness, for those people who think Lang‘s style is childish, in my opinion, only people with soul of little child can make art, child is innocent and passion about one thing they are interested. Adults are fake and so complex. isn't it a good thing right?

When I first heard langlang, i didn't like his facial expressions so i didnt listen to him. Now i realize that he always has his subjective, lively and unique interpretation that makes him one of a kind, and his facial expressiveness adds to his interpretation to deliver his emotions more effectively to the audience. Genius.

The score is like paint.  What the musician does with the paint is up to him.  Some critics just like paint by numbers.  Too bad, because they have no clue what the original painting looked like anyway.  Don't forget that a lot of music was written for the performer to improvise upon and the scores were not cast in stone, like some would have us to believe.

As someone who is playing this piece, big respect for this performance, he makes it sound so flawless and so easy.
For me atleast 4:07 and onwards is very difficult to play with a nice sound, it always sounds "stressfull" and kind of difficult, you can sort of hear the struggle.
But not with Lang Lang that's for certain, he makes it sound like a walk in the park.... :-)
