How might coronavirus reshape geopolitics? For some, the answer is clear: China is on the rise. While Washington embraces “America First,” they argue, Beijing is stepping up to provide material assistance to struggling nations and convening global leaders. But others see a global future where China’s standing is diminished, not bolstered. They look to China’s lack of transparency around the outbreak, stringent domestic lockdown policies, and economic slowdown.
This debate is presented with our partner Foreign Affairs

Kishore Mahbubani - Former President, UN Security Council & Author, "Has China Won?"

Pei is funny.
"We should not expect China's economy to perform as it has in the past"
"I have full faith that America will always do the right thing after exploring all the wrong options, as it did in the past".

His name is Pei Min Xin, not Min Xin Pei. Only Kishore Mahbubani got it right. lol.
I always find it funny that this chinese Pei Min Xin is on the side of the country that cannot even express his name properly. Nothing but a farce.

Kishore really might be the GOAT. Few non-Chinese understand China as well as him. Absolutely excellent.

When Pei mentioned that corvi patients keep popping up in China I looked it up. Today China added 6 new case, in the USA 4,793 new cases. According to Pei, China is at a bad place. WTF.

The last time that Minxin Pei thought a new thought was probably in the 90s.Such cold war relic still quoting Churchill. At this time I really doubt America will do the right things.

US dealt with Belt and road initiative very effectively. US rarely objects to any projects in the beginning, but when these projects were about to put into commercial phase, US could organize some protests by leveraging NGOs and local media at an extreme low cost, for example check out the protest against dam project in Waimaw Myanmar in 2019 Apr. We should all learn such practical and effective tactics from US : how to prevent other countries citizens from having a better life under a good name.

The cliche about America’s course correction is funny. The same argument can be used on China much more effectively. China indeed fked up initially, but once it realised that the virus is more serious than they thought, they immediately shut down Wuhan. Did several rounds of investigation, fired the provincial party secretary, the provincial governor and the Wuhan Party Secretary. The mayor of Wuhan had to go on TV to answer questions on what stopped him from responding quickly. The media also did a lot of soul searching on the treatment of Li Wenliang and remembered him as a national hero. Then the focus was all on how to sort out the virus. If you talk about course correction, this is the quickest correction one can see at such a scale. These all happened in a matter of a week or two (Li Wenliang was awarded a bit later). Let’s wait for the US government to search all the corners for excuses and see when it will properly face it’s own incompetence. One can argue that delivering a long term course correction with smaller but quick steps would be less painful and saves lives. The Chinese believe that longer pain is not as good as shorter pain and lives matter. Not only one individual life matter. 100,000 lives also matter.

The pro-Americans talk like America’s development is complete. This country is in deep trouble with poor infrastructures, a bankrupt school system and a corrupted government.
