At a time when tensions are running high, CIS Executive Director Tom Switzer asked Has China Won? Our debate between John Mearsheimer and Kishore Mahbubani, two of the world’s leading foreign policy intellectuals. Covid-19 has greatly raised tensions between China and the West. Washington and its allies express outrage at the Communist regime’s opacity concerning the outbreak of the coronavirus. Meanwhile, fears are growing that a pandemic that began in the Chinese city of Wuhan may end by increasing Beijing’s international influence and power.

Kishore Mahbubani is author of Has China Won? The Chinese Challenge to American Primacy (just out, PublicAffairs) A former Singaporean ambassador to the United Nations (twice), he was the founding dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. He was a guest of CIS in September 2018.

John Mearsheimer is author of The Great Delusion: Liberal Dreams and International Realities (Yale University Press, 2019) and The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (Norton, 2014.) He is professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago. He was a guest of CIS in August 2019.

John, a fiction writer?  China threat and China containment.  Yet, USA is the only country bombing all over the world, and only country is having wars at other people countries most of the time after WW2.  John, USA not base on your imagination, based on facts, base on your own logic, USA is a threat and should be contained.

The history will tell us who the real bully is.  For some reasons, the Americans think the rise of China is dangerous and CCP is real communism.  Have they even been to China?  Have they spoken to the locals and understood the sentiment of the local citizen regarding their single party government?   Who has a record of invading other countries?  Who has a record of starting wars using fabricated evidence?   People can easily be misled by political rhetoric and forgotten we all live on the same planet.  The human race should work together to solve world problems, not creating more!

it is not correct by saying that Southeast Asian leaders are fearful of China raising power. I have noted a number of Asian leaders have welcome China's investment and its cooperation. Just ask the president of the Philippine.
Kishore is sensible, logical, who spoke frankly and the truth, and on the other hand, John is on the defense who is refusing to accept sensible reasoning, he needs to communicate with the people in SE Asia region with an open mind or maybe he just cannot bear to lose his White European superior status (Been a white American he would have experienced the "the white european superior status"). I am not been rude as I can understand the mentality when I mention "the white european superior status" as this superiority thinking was forged during colonialism and slavery period it is regretfully to say that this thinking and colonialism still largely exist.

The US is a warmongering lawless rogue state. It is founded on genocide, slavery and wars. By the time the Indian wars ended in the late 19th century, the original 500 Indian tribes and two million natives have been reduced to a few tribes with the few thousand survivors incarcerated in reservations or concentration camps. 14 million African slaves were kidnapped to the Americas. Many Asians in Southeast Asia would be puzzled by the emphasis given by Prof. John to contain China. Why do you want to contain China in the first place? Those people who wants to see China contained, sees things through the Western government's lens. They figured out if China became as powerful as USA, then China will follow in the footsteps of USA and flex their muscles across the globe, bullying countries into submission by sanctions etc. and exploit victims like there is no tomorrow. But like Kishore said, Chinese's thinking and value system are different from the imperialist West. Surprisingly those same people did not ask for USA to be contained given the untold destruction, sufferings and exploitation unleashed by USA since time immemorial.

In terms of world view Mearsheimer is a dwarf compared to Kishore. Mearsheimer wrote books. Kishore too wrote books and was also President of the UN Security Council for 2 years. Mearsheimer is a one trick pony with one ideology of two hegemonies. Kishore has seen it all and done it all.

At the moment even the scientists are not sure about the origin of coronavirus, therefore how can Australia be so sure of it? When Australian speak of this as if it is the absolute truth that the covid-19 is from China, where are the scientific evidence? All we know is that China was the first country had reported it, and China have the coronavirus type B which is the mutated version from A. As we now know covid-19 was found in france 20 days before China reported to the WHO, why france is hidding it and not reporting it? At the moment we still do not know enough about the covid-19, therefore how can we start an independent inquiry into coronavirus. Both the US and Australia should stop politicalize covid-19 and let the scientists do their job and work together with countries around the world.

The moderator should not be called a "moderator". He clearly either intentionally or 'Unknowingly' tries to espouse the western "misrepresentation". He tried to call the covid 19 virus  the "Wuhan" virus and tried to call Taiwan formosa etc and never mentioned that it was part of the country of China in its history. Both of which was disputed masterfully by Mr Mahbubani. Thank you. Mr Mahbubani, a lot of education still is needed with these "media" sorts.
