The White House communication department made a massive blunder after claiming world leaders applauded when Vice President Mike Pence dropped President Donald Trump’s name in a speech.

Despite stating leaders from European and Asian governments had cheered Mr Pence after he mentioned Trump, video footage revealed the exact opposite.

Mr Pence was speaking at the Munich Security Conference when he passed on Mr Trump’s regards to the dignitaries gathered. Mr Pence paused for several moments, waiting for a response/applause, but the crowd remained silent.

Although the deafening and humiliating silence, the White House published a transcript of the speech which listed Mr Pence’s words before including “(Applause)”.

In the address, Mr Pence said: “I bring greetings from the 45th president of the United States of America, President Donald Trump.”

But the White House quoted Mr Pence as saying: “To them and to all of you, it’s my great honour to speak to you today, on behalf of a champion of freedom and a champion of a strong national defence, the 45th President of the United States of America, President Donald Trump. (Applause).”

The conference was part of the inaugural John McCain Dissertation Award Ceremony. The event paid tribute to Mr McCain, who passed away in August 2018.

A copy of Pence's prepared remarks also show "applause" notes for introductions of the American delegation, which included Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Though Pence did give a shout-out to Graham – which was followed by applause – he skipped the intro for Pelosi.
