As a former police officer from decades past, I am beyond words!  This is outrageous and no way to treat anyone from our neighbor to the north.  Unlike when I served, many American cops are A-Holes.  Stay away from them.

As an American, please accept my apologies, dear lady.

Georgia cops on I-75 target ALL out-of-state license plates. They use I-75 as their biggest source of income. It's not unlike like small town cops who use the interstate that passes through their jurisdiction to make money. The backward-assed, hillbilly "Let's go git them Duke boys" mindset is the same, only it's a whole state of cops, and not just a few small towns.

She needs to go after the officer and sue. This is unacceptable! A lot of people don't have $1000 to post bail and get their car out of impound. This could really ruin someones life and isn't just an oops...

My husband who is british was pulled over in the usa while we were home in usa visiting as we were in living in the uk. The cop never really said why he pulled us over, but when my husband gave the cop his uk license the cop pulled the same thing. My husband had his passport on him and i had my usa DL and passport on me and i had a printed copy of the law that said he could drive with his uk lic in my state. I told the cop...hey back up right there. Here is a copy of the law and if your in doubt plz get on your radio and consult someone above u who can give u the information. The cop went back to the cursier and after about 8 to 10mins came back to us, gave our IDs back, told us we were fine and sent us on our way. He never said we were correct or apologized or even told us what the hell he pulled us over for in the 1st place.

That cop needs to not only be fired, but she needs to be brought up on charges including, but not limited to, harassment, kidnaping, and false imprisonment. This cannot be a simple mistake.  If you are a cop in the US and don't know that Canadian driver's licenses are valid here, then you need to quit your job right the frack now. No telling what other simple law enforment concepts you have failed to learn and are likely to get someone else killed. This is inexcusable.

I'm shocked she's not going after the officer. She should be removed from her job.

You actually can drive in the US with a Canadian driver's license... There's an agreement the two countries between each other that allows it. This cop needs a lot more training.

Don't these asshats know Canadians spend tons of money in our economy every year? Do they want to discourage them from coming to our country and spending their money?

The officer was clearly incompetent and wrong on all counts.
Not knowing the states own law on Canadian license driving
was bad enough but refusal to allow a foreign national a call to the consulate is appalling.
The department in general and the officer specifically owes the driver a formal apology followed with full reimbursement of all expenses.
Then the officer should be placed on unpaid leave/suspension.
You will not find a stronger supporter than myself for the LEO community.
But I have no patience for anyone in any profession who displays such a blatant form of incompetence.

No Mrs. Heather Hiscox... it wasn't a mistake by the police officer lady. This is what you call PURE EXTORTION. As soon as the cop knew that she is not an United States citizen, the police lady decided to INCARCERATE her over very minor issue for what; MONEY... All too often this happens on the United States HIGHWAYS all across the country even to the United States citizen. If the officer lady really needed to verify her identity and where she was coming from, the Canadian lady could have easily given her other form of current identification or called someone. However, it never went that far, because again the police officer lady had already decided that she needs to arrest and throw someone in jail, because her promotion is coming soon and she needed one more traffic stop, one more arrest, need to generate revenue for her police department, etc, etc, etc... lol... It is the idea that she is a Canadian citizen, what does she know and I can do whatever I want to her... lol... I am so GLAD that the officer lady let the Canadian lady keep her cellphone or No one would have known where she was or what sort of trouble she was in. Thank God. She made it alive... I am certain this Canadian lady won't ever come back to the United States ALONE.

Cops should be fully liable for their malfeasances.

How do we make that happen?

Wait you got arrested for driving with a Canada license but illegals drive around the United States with no license no insurance and absolutely nothing happens to them?

The sad thing is in the United States, it usually takes a lawyer about6 to 8 years of studying law and then passing the bar exam in order to practice law. It usually takes a police officer between 6 and 12 months of the academy along with field training to be cut loose to enforce the law ... There lies the problem! And in the United States police officers are actually allowed to be ignorant of the law... You a hypothetical defendant are required to prove your innocence after someone who doesn't truly understand the law charges you with a crime. Welcome to the good old USA! And side note as a defendant you are not allowed to use ignorance of the law as a plead if you are charged with a crime even if you don't know you were committing a crime.

so NOW you SUE THE OFFICER PERSONALLY for undue harassment, unlawful arrest, mental abuse and every penny the whole fiasco cost her. then demand her to be fired. I expect about 3.5 million bucks is the lawsuit cap of police depts. down there.   so I hope she sued for every penny she deserves. and I hope the cop was fired.
