Taiwan’s ruling party elected a new chairman on Sunday. A moderate will replace the post vacated by Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen who resigned as party chief in November following a devastating defeat in local elections. This move is seen as clearing the way for Tsai to seek re-election in 2020. Meanwhile, there has been heated discussion as to what to do with the 1992 Consensus, which was formally rejected by Tsai after Chinese President Xi Jinping called for peaceful reunification earlier this month.
Tsai Ing-wen formally declared her opposition toward the 1992 Consensus, which states there is only one China. She also called on parties in Taiwan not to mention this term again. Her sharp response on January 2 came right after Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the people of Taiwan, calling for joint endeavors toward national reunification.
Why did Tsai have this attitude toward cross-Strait relations? And what will be the immediate impact on cross-Strait relations? Discussion guest are Xu Heqian, a current affairs commentator who used to work in public affairs in Taiwan, and Dr. Zhong Houtao, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
