China's GDP grew 6.6 percent last year, the slowest in 28 years but above the target of 6.5 percent. For the first time, the GDP surpassed 90 trillion yuan (about 13 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2018. Some Western commentators have hyped up the slowdown, saying China may hit a new bottom. They've been skeptical of the Chinese economy all along, but are they finally striking the right note? What are the factors behind the cooling of China’s economic growth? How will China adjust its economic policies?
This episode’s guests include John Gong, professor of economics at the University of International Business and Economics in the Beijing studio; Brandon Blackburn-Dwyer, president of Grasshopper Group Inc. in Philadelphia; Ralph Winnie, director of the China Program at the Eurasian Business Coalition in Washington, D.C.; and Daniel Gros, director of Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels.

I just want to say two things, MS. Liu Xin.
First, if and when China shifts to new economic policies, I think it should be in steps with what Chinese people need, & their economic stamina, not in steps with these greedy foreign investors. (Of course, they demand China to change to their greeds & needs.) But China exists for Chinese people, not for these foreign investors. These ugly hyenas think they can shamelessly demand China to change to their needs, because that's how they've been working with Washington DC, lobbying politicians.
Contrary to those ignorant American commentators, China's economic development has been very different from that of the US. The two has walked two very different paths. These American pundits are the main culprits who have been blindly leading America to the cliff. So, no matter how sound they make their arguments, these only amount to the last standing pride of bunch of losers.

It's not in trouble, but it is a large and diverse economy now. If the country does not learn higher level integrated economics, then business as usual will slowly choke the market over time.

Who are the commenters with pessimistic view of CHINA's economic growth instead of relying on the factors from country's original.
Simple answer: these commenters have HATE and JEALOUSY towards CHINA - one country that has capabilities to beat theirs; they are not solely media associated but from universities, forum stages, monetary investment associations, etc with their particular indulgence for publicity and secret intentions to procure "gain" or "loss".
Don't be surprised or shocked that such presentation of "pessimist views" is instigated by Pentagon in associated with US FED to influence WALL STREET as well to influence the rest of the world in order to manipulate the value of US$!!!! SIMPLE AND EASY EQUATION.
America had and still is relying on this fantasy for. years for its survival.
Also, America has its "illness" to blame others for its shortcomings - just how it started trade tensions, sanctions, by its mad dog president.

The whole world has slowed down. Natural it affects China too. Most importantly numbers alone isn't the main issue but the targeted improvements to all strata of society. Over heated economies are actually bad for the 90% but only good for the 10%. Slowing things down is good for humanity for sustainable growth

Well, if you don't like 6.6 percentage growth, give it to America. With such growth rate, we will bomb the entire world year round.

Hu Jintao was a smart leader. Most of China's growth came under his watch. He facilitated China's growth by stealth. The world gave China a free ride at the expense of other developing countries. Xi Jinping is a different ball game. The world saw his pretentious swagger and started waking up to emerging reality. Donal Trump is not really the disrupter that people make him out to be. This trade dispute was long time coming and Trump is only the manifestation. If China does not wise up quickly, a 4% GDP growth next decade would be very attractive. All this pussy footing is not going to help anybody. It is time China starts behaving like a developing economy.

China's pace of reform appears to be going into foot-dragging mode as economic growth slows down. The Belt and Road Initiative might be a stop-gap arrangement to stimulate growth, but what happens after the infrastructure projects are completed? : China will be back to square one. While softening of growth seems to be cyclical , China sectoral growth cannot continue its economic boom in isolation of slowing global markets, its trade war with Trump, and its diplomatic snafus: tit-for-tat detaining of Canadian citizens doing business in China-are further muddling the situation and tarnishing China's positive image abroad.

China's gdp in 2017 was 82.7 trillions yuan and in 2018 is 90.03 trillions yuan. The actual growth is (90.03-82.7)/82.7 =8.86%. China is giving it as 6.6% gdp growth probably because the revised 90.03 trillions yuan includes previously not counted but now matured industries. This happen in 2014 and earlier too in a 5 years cycle.

Nonsense.... China will do perfectly well. Competition is good for China.
It will better care for it's citizens n not take them for granted. Most Chinese citizens are cowed into silence n have no choice. A culture is only worth as much as the way they treat their people.

Professor Gong is correct, don't over adjust to stimulate the economy and leave some room for the next cycle. I may also add that don't over invest and invest at a manageable speed.
