Anya Parampil explains that Denny Tamaki,  the winner of recent elections for governor in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, ran a campaign against the US military presence in the region. Peter Kuznick, Professor of History at American University, joins In Question to tell us whether or not Tamaki’s election will lead to change and if he believes Japan will remain in the US sphere of influence in Asia.

With all those US bases, the well water on the whole island must be super contaminated. That is generally how it goes at US bases in other countries, dump toxic waste anywhere.

The United States nuked Japan, even if 73 years have gone by, there are still Japanese that can tell the story of horror of seeing two cities being wiped away in front of their eyes. There are still Japanese being born with birth defects because of the radiation. The US don't want the 3rd largest economy to be independent, because if Japan becomes independent, it can pursue it's own economic and foreign policy. US doesn't want Japan to be independent, because they could elect an anti-American leader, who could bring forth suppressed anti-American feeling to the forefront. The same with Germany, both Germany and Japan are highly developed, if they free themselves from the American yoke, they might take revenge on the United States.

Time has come for all countries to stand on their own, albeit with allies.

Okinawa is a major US hub for nuclear weapons and SAC (Strategic Air Command)  It's the most southern island of the Ryukyu Islands from Japan.  It's history from WWII is remarkable.  The bases have tripled since I lived there as a kid in the 50's.  I admired the Okinawan's even as a youngster and
learned a lot about their culture.  Such honorable and decent people.  Too bad we have treated them badly.  I still have much respect for them.

This is beautiful, Trump’s America First Policy facing blowback already. Japan will ally with China and Russia because they’re more stable with their policies. The rest of the world needs to wake up and push America out to significantly weaken their ability to cause war and destruction globally. Great job Japan!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Okinawans have had enough with the bases and problems created by the US military personnel there.  Tokyo is willing to pay large amount of money just to have US bases relocated somewhere else, yet Trump has said that allies (Japan included) have been taking advantage of US generosity in "protecting" them.  He wants European and Japan to pay for the protection expenses (as if they don't).  He tweeted saying it's time Japan shares the financial burden.  Of course, he never mentioned the rapes and violence committed by US personnel there.

The Marine Corps has relocated much of it's personnel to Guam  and has been doing so over the past couple of years. There is a movement to do the same in Guam. The military presence has made housing unaffordable to many island locals.

That's what " Unconditional surrender " means.  Japan is just another US state but will not acknowledge it for fear of a revolts.

I was a Air Force vet stationed in Okinawa in 2008-2011.  I agree that there needs to be some military reduction of US forces, but it is home to the 2nd largest US Air Force Base in the world which is strategic.
