America has become a disfunctional hell hole run by the super rich to the detriment of everyone else. Red herrings such as guns, abortion, flag burning, transgender bathrooms, minimum wage, immigration etc, just to divide and distract the few sheeple that actually vote.

If you are taught to look inward, to believe your way is the only way, you get a country where myths become beliefs.  I have seen diverse capitalism in all the countries of Europe. They have many companies competing in the marketplace, not all consolidated where the marketplace is controlled by just a few.  I have seen infrastructure projects that can amaze the mind, and how public spending to improve the lives of the citizens and the efficiency of business just works together.  I have experienced citizens who have diverse beliefs but still see the humanity of helping all citizens to have opportunities to expand an individual's freedoms.  Where education is a right for all the citizens, the freedom of an individual to expand his intelligence. Where health care is provided to all, using an arm of the government to collect premims, coordinate the private companies to provide the services at a economic cost nations can afford.

All empires believe they are exceptional. Romans, British etc. Now Trump threatens Saudis because they are buying cheap drones and other weapons from China. In the end all empires die by overextending their military and being unable to produce their own goods, relying on imports, causing currency crisis. The problem is the vacuum to come. The EU and India will dominate in 50years time. China still has to face the oligarchy that runs it.

America is a racist country that only a White can lead and do whatever they want. And they are one that is destroying America for not getting what they want from other foreign country and race!  Every other race of American aren't important and aren't considered American American. America will continue to tore apart as along as they are still around dominating everything American patriotic think tank.

One of the saddest fact of the USA is that bright and wise people like Prof. Sachs would never be interested in running for president. Then you get people like Trump & Pence...

America is nothing simply of a White-American idealism and thinking crime in America and against the world. It's a done and comfortable thought now that is base on just one race and that is White period. And everyone else has to fix their destruction and their greed as second class human being.

American Exceptionalism ended when US decided to de-couple gold and US Dollars.  Since then, US can print as much US Dollars as it pleases.  And as result, all Americans, not just the suckers in Wall Streets, learned the sweet deal of print money and take real wealth from other nations.  As a people, US has developed the dependency on others for their living standards well above the rest of the world.  The outsourcing of the manufacturing jobs is just a symptom, not a root cause, of the end of American Exceptionalism.  One way or the other, without failing, everyone decides the best way to have a good living in US is not doing manual jobs, but to either take social welfare or doing simple work in office or in service sector.  Long gone are the drive to MAKE SOMETHING, INVENT SOMETHING, AND LEAD THE HUMANITY.  The end is here before we know it.  The end of American Exceptionalism.  Done deal!

Now the question is, will US get out of the way and let other nations to take on the EXCEPTIONALISM and PUSH HUMANITY FORWARD?

A great interview. It is so simple as he exposed it.
A government of the 21st century should be there to guarantee that anybody gets a faire share of the developments of a country. It is not fair that so many people works hard not only with one job, but more than one, and is not able to make ends meet, not able to have the family medicaly ensured, not being able to pay a home, not being able to eat real food but only junk, not being able to pay the car costs needed to work and earn money, etc.

A government should be there to avoid that big corporations make their shareholders rich by killing the citizens with junk food, sugar, opioid medicines not allowed anywhere else, etc.

If a government is not able to deliver a better life for its people, and is only fit to repress its citizens encarcerating more people per capita than any country in the world, (including some of the worst dictatorial systems in the world), if not shooting them without any reasson, then I give the right to republicans... there should be less government, or better still, no government at all. Just let Anarchy rule!!!

I am happy being european, really.

Excellent interview.  What Jeffrey Sachs is very correct about America.  If all those in the white house and congress are still stubbornly, arrogantly, and selfishly going their way, America will be doom for sure.

Its not confusion. Stop acting surprised. The American purpose is profit at all costs. For example, the US military is just a corporate tool that lacks any success criteria and it's senior leaders can not adapt to change. Leaders in America are more a  interested in maintaining their status in society rather than any self evaluation. We can't solve any problem because to do so means current leaders in America will have to admit the failures that they are. Everybody with power is holding onto the past while the country falls apart. Meanwhile the rest of the world is moving ahead without us.

What's exceptional is that the worthless dollar is still accepted around the world as a valid currency. When the World wakes up to that, we're screwed..
