With a PHD in Sociology (recent0 and being an active Registered Nurse -I am unable to get a job that uses my credentials -reason given - my age (of course the companies can't say that is the reason) - instead the rationale is 'we must consider how many years you can bring to us) !! just another way of justifying not paying for the credentials or to hire an older worker -

Criticism of unbridled excess of capitalism is not Marxist. He says Marx was a critic of capitalism,  and he had some valid arguments, but that does not make you a Marxist by any stretch. He says you should take different perspectives, and not have some kind of blind faith that the only religious following on Capitalism is the true faith. Capitalism has its problems, it is not GOD!

As a poor kid philosophy major at Yale in the 60s I had several politely and tacitly Marxian professors.  One was actually a Hegelian.   We had more majors studying Marx than any other subject.  That very popular professor was denied tenure.  Why?  "Personality issues".  Went on to success elsewhere.  But the anecdote rhymes with what Wolff says here.
