Voters in Malaysia have thrown the ruling coalition from power for the first time since independence 61 years ago.

The architect of the opposition's upset win is the veteran politician who made the ruling alliance a formidable force during his 22 years as Prime Minister.

Mahathir Mohamad returned to active politics two years ago in an unusual role for him.

As an opposition leader, he accused Prime Minister Najib Razak of stealing millions of dollars in government funds.

And he's channeled the anger of millions of Malaysians about the rising cost of living and corruption into his latest electoral success - two months before his 93rd birthday.

Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom.

Guests:
Oh Ei Sun - Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute in Malaysia & former political secretary to Najib Razak
Bridget Welsh - Associate Professor, John Cabot University
Fung Siu - Asia Economist Intelligence Unit

Sorry Miss Fung... As a voter in Malaysia... Prosecuting Najib is one of the biggest issue why Malaysians voted Najib out... It's not just the economy, but rather justice that people seek... I think if you are physically here now, you will feel the sentiments, and I'm confident the new government will pursue all the corruption charges against Najib

Oh Ei Sun... You were FORMER ADVISOR to Najib, which makes your words automatically not creditable. So the last thing I want to hear from you is how hated Mahathir was when he was last in office, and you can't even acknowledge how much more your former boss is hated by the public now

One commentator is a Neo liberal who would love to see Najib continue to raise tax on the population while cutting taxes to the Rich, One representing Singaporean point of view while correctly pointing out the corruption on all levels but Singapore being in the same boat that has raise tax GST while cutting tax for Rich people and Corporations is scared stiff of a more Democratic and Human rights based country will result in Singaporean citizens demanding the same Democracy and Human rights refrain from commenting on this issue. The only honest commentator is Bridget Welsh long time intellectual that live and fell in love with Malaysia really representing a social democratic progressive Malaysia.

Feel so disgusted by some westerners who think their country is any better than us. They're actually same and their politics much worse than ever. Europe is crumbling because of fascism. I'm so disgusted too by those who claims such thing when they never live in this country. Don't talk nonsense if you're not Malaysian.

Take Two
Fung Siu is wrong about the economy of Malaysia under Najib. Yes, On paper it show a promising economy. But, as an ordinary Malaysia as myself. I don't feel the economy is improving. The wage is low. Comparing to the rising cost of living. Fung Siu should have gone to the ground and do some real assesment instead of looking at chart.
