Historic talks between the two Koreas’ leaders take place on April 27 at the Peace House in the border village of Panmunjom. The summit is being hailed as a crucial step in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The gathering, however, is not an easy one, given the escalation of tensions last year after Pyongyang’s series of nuclear and missile tests, and Washington’s war rhetoric. What has led us here? And what does China think about the peace talks between its neighbors? Chen Xiaohe, associate professor at the School of International Studies of Renmin University of China, and Zhao Tong, a research fellow at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy, joined The Point.

According to the latest UN report on innovation, China jumped from third place to second place for international patent applications filings in 2017, surpassing Japan and closing in on the US, which has been the long-time leader. How is the trend projected to evolve in the near future? And what has made it possible for Chinese applications to grow so fast? Liu Xin had an exclusive interview with Dr. Francis Gurry, director general of WIPO, the UN agency that is at the heart of technology and innovation.

I agree with China’s position. If there is a child who is withdrawn at school, last thing you want is to isolate this person. Punishment will only cause deterioration in his behaviour and become more extreme. Instead you would want to reach out to him and help him to build healthy, positive and productive relationship with others. Similarly, punishing DPRK with sanctions and isolation is only going to be detrimental to future of Korean peninsular. Allowing DPRK engagement on all fronts including economic, cultural and social fronts with its neighbouring countries will be more productive and effective for their society and leadership. It will help their nation to be more open and receptive to others and they badly need healing from their past conflicts.

before the summit, Kim visited China first, then China informed SK about the visit, finally, this meeting surfaced as what we are seeing now.

I'm very disappointed to see that this is China's position. At least it seems that when Kim visited his masters in Beijing they allowed him to go forward with this engagement & who knows what will happen when that engagement progresses forward? Hopefully it will lead to a future where the Korean peninsula unifies into one Korean country under freedom & Democracy with a pardon for all crimes against humanity that had been committed in DPRK in the past. A solution can be to make the Kim dynasty the Royal figure head kind of like the UK royals are & have a Democratic form of government.for the entire Korean nation.
