A remark by Hu Angang, a professor from Tsinghua University, has raised much controversy in China recently. Hu says China has already surpassed the United States in terms of economy, science and technology, as well as the overall national strength. However, critics note that China ranks only 27th out of 137 countries in the 2017-2018 edition of the Global Competitiveness Report published by the World Economic Forum. In the science and technology race, the US tops the list, followed by the UK and Japan. China didn’t even make it the top 20. So how should we consider questions of relative strength?
